The world is facing a terrible threat. The coronavirus pandemic has caused widespread fear and panic. In order to curb the spread of the virus, health experts and governments around the world have asked everybody to stay indoors. India has officially been put in lockdown for 21 days. While individuals are being allowed to step out to purchase essentials or visit the doctor in emergencies, by and large, the world’s second-largest population find themselves stuck at home for a few weeks. At this time, it can be difficult to feel motivated or happy, which can have a negative effect on a person’s mental health. Here’s a look at a few things you can do to stay happy and healthy through this lockdown:

1. Follow a Schedule

Studies have proved that when you work from home, you’re likely to be more stressed than if you’re at work, which could lead to you feeling more anxious or depressed than usual. A good way to battle this is by turning your laptop or computer off at the end of the workday and finding a fun activity to do instead. Tempting though it may be, it’s best to avoid watching TV late into the night as functioning on little to no sleep can make you feel lethargic and uneasy through the day. It can also ruin your body’s immunity system. To get through the lockdown, try and create a schedule that incorporates your working hours, the time you need to finish housework, and some time for relaxation.

2. Stay Active

Exercise is especially important as it helps not just your physical health, but your mental health too. You can take active breaks through the day, like walking around the house for 20 minutes every hour, or do a fun dance workout in the comfort of your bedroom. When you work out, endorphins are released. These are known as feel-good hormones and they can help elevate your mood. A workout that incorporates some yoga and meditation will also help you stay mentally calm through this time.

3. Embrace Your Hobbies

Now that you’re no longer spending hours of your day commuting to and from the office, you’ll have a bit more free time on your hands. You can use this time to be creative and catch up on your hobbies. Cooking, painting, reading, and even playing video games are all great ways for you to keep your mood up and release any pent-up anger, anxiety or frustration. These activities help you focus and stay busy, so you don’t have time to worry or stress about what’s going out outside. Try and keep the news off while you enjoy these activities.

4. Watch Your Diet

Many people have the tendency to make poor diet choices when at home, but it’s important that you eat well at this time. The virus has more of an impact on you if your immunity is low, so you need to eat the right kind of food to boost your immunity. Adding flavours like garlic and ginger and spices like cinnamon and turmeric to your meals can help with this. Eating fruits that are rich in Vitamin C and nuts like almonds will also help you keep your immunity up and your energy levels stable.

5. Stay Connected

Everybody has been asked to stay at home with their families, but some of you may be home alone. That doesn’t mean you can’t talk to your friends or stay connected. Try and message or call a couple of your friends or relatives every day. When you have the time, you can video call them. Seeing their faces will definitely help you feel less alone, which will help you maintain your mental peace.

This lockdown isn’t going to be easy, but it is absolutely necessary for everybody to stay home to help flatten the curve and defeat the virus. If you’re feeling a bit low at this time, you can follow these steps to stay happy and healthy until the lockdown is lifted.
